Dear Crash Course Team,

My name is Jennifer Poo, and I am highly interested in the Script Editor position for Crash Course. I am recent graduate of the University of Texas at Austin where I received a Master’s in Cell and Molecular Biology studying enteric microbial pathogens in human cell line models.

My experience in education began when I was an undergraduate at the University of California, Irvine where I, and a team of other aspiring science educators, ran an online publication called Morning Sign Out at UCI (MSO) where we wrote explainers and video scripts on topics in medicine, pharmacy, and about scientific research both locally at UCI and globally. As a writer for MSO, I wrote about drug discoveries, made complex scientific concepts more approachable, and covered topical medical issues in ways that were engaging to the college demographic. Later on, I moved up in the organization to the role of Medicine and Research Committee Chair where I facilitated writers and assigned topics related to developments in medicine and research being done at UCI.

As a graduate student at UT Austin, I continued pursuing science education via outreach while the rest of my time was occupied by data analysis and benchwork. In the lab, I was also able to practice science education via mentoring undergraduates and serving as a teaching assistant for the instructional Microbiology lab course.

In that time, I have consistently demonstrated my ability to synthesize complex information and present it in a clear and concise manner, translating technical jargon into clear, jargon-free language. I am adept at adapting content for different target audiences, whether it be fellow scientists, students, or the general public. Additionally, I am proficient in using G-Suite tools and applications for writing and communication, and extremely familiar with software such as Adobe Suite and RStudio to create engaging visuals, and Zotero and Obsidian to keep my work organized. I am also familiar with using HTML/CSS in web and graphic design.

I am excited about the opportunity to play a role in educating the next generation of scholars. Crash Course helped me immensely as a high schooler and taught me the value of high quality and easily accessible education. The prospect of working with a talented team of educators and writers greatly motivates me.

My resume is linked in my application for your review, which provides further details about my qualifications and accomplishments. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my skills align with your organization's needs in more detail. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Poo
